Why are there shingle granules in my gutters and yard?

Granules in the gutters or downspouts often indicate that the shingles on your roof are deteriorating. Over time, the granules on the surface of asphalt shingles can become loose and fall off. This is a normal part of the wear and tear process, but excessive granule loss may mean that your shingles are nearing the end of their lifespan.

The granules on shingles serve a number of important functions. They protect the asphalt coating from the sun’s UV rays, add color to the shingles, and provide fire resistance. When these granules fall off, the asphalt underneath is exposed to the elements, which can speed up the aging process and lead to leaks or other types of damage.

Therefore, if you’re noticing a significant amount of granules in your gutters or downspouts, it may be a sign that your roof needs to be inspected by a professional to assess whether repair or replacement is needed.
